Abstract

A simple, autonomous, floating craft is described that was designed to take digital images of approximately 1 m 2 areas of the ground in rocky terrain. The vehicle (Monty) consisted of a helium-filled balloon and rolling framework that successfully traversed a wide variety of features, including steep rocky slopes with boulders >1 m in diameter and at wind speeds as high as 5 m/ s at the Haughton Impact Crater in the Canadian Arctic. This vehicle concept has obvious implications for the exploration of other planetary bodies that have an atmosphere.
