Abstract

A simple unit for the production of fast scan images on a standard Stereoscan scanning electron microscope is described. A normal laboratory oscilloscope is used as the display tube and also provides the line drive signal. The frame drive is taken from a simple ramp generator, and low priced commercially available amplifiers are used to drive the standard Stereoscan scan coils. The raster contains 120–150 lines at a frame rate of 50 f.p.s. compared to the conventional television standard of 25 frames per second each of 405 or 625 lines. Using the normal light pipe/ scintillator and head amplifier chain, excellent pictures are obtained down to beam currents of 5 x 10 t-9 amps.
