Abstract

We present the results of a test in an electron-hadron beam (5–90 GeV) of the prototype of a position detector. This position detector consists of proportional tubes with charge division readout, giving the position and a coarse value of the shower energy. This detector will be used in the end cap electromagnetic calorimeter (bouchon) of the UA1 experiment (CERN p p collider). We give results on the properties of the tubes and on the development of the shower in the lead-plastic sandwhich.
