Abstract

For years, Franca Rame and Dario Fo were denied visas to the United States on political grounds. Since 1984, however, they have been allowed to come here twice. Late last spring they performed on the east coast, during which time the ensuing brief interview took place. Their unabashedly militant plays are amongst the most widely translated and staged in the world. For them, in fact, theater is a way of engaging in political practice. We thought it appropriate, therefore, to speak about the role of culture in politics. As it turned out, Franca Rame was unable to participate because of a family tragedy.
