Abstract

The work done by Hollander at the start of the twentieth century is considered to be pioneering work in the field of transplantation of autologous adipose tissue. It was already known in the early 1930s that only small particles have the chance of healing. But this method was soon forgotten until the 1980s, when liposuction was introduced and transplantation of autologous adipose tissue once again became the focus of attention. By this, there emerged the possibility that larger volumes could be dealt with. In our time, the credit of this rediscovery goes to the plastic surgeon Sidney Coleman of New York. He published the results of breast enlargement using the lipostructure method. This was originally meant for the face and was published in the year 2007 in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS). In the meantime, the potential of transplantation of autologous adipose tissue has been acknowleged worldwide.
