Abstract

In this short story by novelist Fan Xiaoqing , she poses an important question for book lovers: At what point do the books we own end up owning us? If books posses something of a life force, the ability to change lives with even a few simple words read at the right time and place, what are the moral dimensions of the bonds that bind us to our books and books to our lives? In this bittersweet narrative of a chance encounter between an unlikely book and an improbable reader, Fan Xiaoqing reveals a little more of the life-altering transformations reading almost any book can engender.
