Abstract

SEXAFS data for bulk Nil 2 and three surface phases of iodine chemisorption on Ni{100} surfaces taken above the IL 3-edge are presented and analysed using simulations including several scattering shells. A c(2 × 2) phase is shown to involve no change in the Ni-I spacing relative to the bulk iodide and the adsorption site is identified as the 4-fold coordinated hollow. The generality of using multi-shell simulations for such identifications is discussed. Two lower coverage, (2 × 3) and c(2 × 8), chemisorbed phases show spectra generally consistent with models based on mixed sites. The (2 × 3) phase data indicate low symmetry adsorption sites while both phases probably involve predominantly near-4-fold hollow adsorption sites.
