Abstract

A simple shear box has been constructed so that normal stress, shear stress and sample volume can be applied and controlled separately. This allows arbitrary stress plths to be applied to a soil sample, thus permitting convenient and rapid measurement of critical state parameters and soil response. The two drives consist of a stepping motor and screw arrangement, operating under the control of a computer, which also acquires force and displacement data. The apparatus is able to carry out constant volume, constant stress and reversing shear tests, and for small sample heights it reproduces triaxial measurements of shear strength.
