Abstract

A need arose for a device in which a radioactive isotope (cobalt-60) could be stored, and which also could be used for irradiating insects in various research programs, or for irradiating seeds or other small objects. We have designed, and are using, the device which was custom constructed by a local machine shop at very low cost. It is safe, and can be handled without any danger that the operator will be overexposed to radiation escaping from it. Allowable leakage tolerances and requirements for radiation protection of personnel are indicated by the Atomic Energy Commission Regulations (1963). Further technical radiation information was available from Glasstone (1958), Comar (1955), Bacq and Alexander (1961), and Andrews (1961).
