Abstract
We estimate the polarizability α of atomic iodine by a semiempirical method using the oscillator strength sum rule for the valence electrons and empirical term energies. Values obtained are 9.3×10−24 cm3 <α<11.6×10−24 cm3. Furthermore, we obtained a lower bound on α in terms of an average transition energy E≳ which is rigorous in the approximation where the effect of shell electrons on the core is neglected. This bound is α≳7.4×10−24 cm3 for E≳ = 6.9×104 cm−2. All values are significantly larger than results calculated previously.
