Abstract

The atomic dipole is a very useful approximate model for an atomic system, and there are already many classical and quantum treatments dealing with its absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation. Mandel obtained some heuristic results about this problem by the analysis of classical electrodynamics and an ansatz with some quantum mechanical conditions[l]. These include the lifetime of spontaneous emission, the exponential decay law and a viewpoint that the energy absorbed by the atomic dipole is stored within the near field, and may later transfer to the radiation field during emission.
