Abstract
In connection with the determination of trace heavy metals in animal and plant tissue by optical emission spectroscopy, the need arose for a device that could maintain controlled atmospheres at the analytical gap at steady state conditions during high current dc arc excitation periods in which relatively large amounts of matrix constituents were vaporized. Operational needs required precise and continuous adjustment of electrode position, minimal contamination risk, and suitability for routine use.
