Abstract

Purpose: In low-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy, a volume study is carried out by acquiring 8-14 transverse ultrasound (US) images from a trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) probe. Manual segmentation is a time-consuming task. Furthermore, because of the poor quality of TRUS images, especially at the base and apex, segmentation results suffer from high intra-observer and inter-observer variability. We present a fast semi-automatic segmentation algorithm that is less sensitive to the user's experience and image quality.
