Abstract

Using the model Hamiltonian derived by us recently for the study of liquid 3He we have succeeded in obtaining an effective mass, m ∗, of 2.99 m for the helium atom which matches exactly with the experimental data by Wheatley and co-workers. The evaluation has been done following a calculation of the fermionic part of the specific heat of liquid 3He at low temperatures using a self-consistent method which has been developed by us earlier. The present calculation also enables us to determine the chemical potential of the system of liquid 3He self-consistently.
