Abstract
This bibliography contains references to literature written between 1960 and early 1972. That period of time was not the only one in which controversy existed concerning the relationships between religion and public education, but, because it inherited unresolved problems from pre vious years and because of the Supreme Court decisions on prayer and Bible reading and, more recently, on state aid to church schools, that period was one in which this area of concern received much scholarly and public attention. A part of this attention was a vast amount of literature. A portion of this literature is assembled and organized in this bibliography. The bibliography is not a collection of all the literature written during the period on the subject of religion and public education. To have at tempted that would have made the bibliography of unmanageable size. It does not include, for example, the vast amount of newspaper reporting and commenting on this issue, nor does it even mention all the scholarly works in the field. Rather, it concentrates on some books and numerous articles found in legal and educational journals. Even here, articles which seemed only to report an event, such as the Supreme Court decisions, were excluded, while articles which seemed to include some commentary along with their reporting were included. Also, articles which had only local or regional interest were excluded. Aside from these exclusions, however, the bibliography is a rather complete listing of articles from legal and educational journals dealing with many aspects of the subject area. The bibliography was compiled with the hope that it might help a newcomer to work his way into the field and provide for the scholar a handy tool for further research.
