Abstract

Results from two seismic refraction profiles radiating NE and SW from the Precambrian Charnian block of Charnwood Forest in the central Midlands of England are described and interpreted using surface geology, borehole, aeromagnetic and gravity data, and previous seismic research.Charnian rocks probably extend beneath Palaeozoic and Mesozoic cover along the length of the profiles. However, to the NE of Charnwood the Charnian basement is intruded by a NE extension of the Mountsorrel granodiorite complex, while to the W it is intruded by a possible NW extension of the S Leicestershire and/or S Charnwood diorites.
