Abstract

Fourteen first instar larvae of Oestrus ovis were removed from the eye (one case), ear (one), nose (one) and throat (two) of five male patients from Ranya, some 450 km north of Baghdad. All patients manifested severe symptoms according to the organ in which the parasites were located. Symptoms lasted usually for three to ten days. All five patients had been in close contact with sheep and three gave histories which suggested previous attacks by O. ovis larvae. The demonstration of larvae from the ear, nose and throat appears to be the first from Iraq. The larvae measured 2–8 mm. There are doubtless other cases of human myiasis due to O. ovis in the Ranya area of Iraq, where sheep raising is practised by a large sector of the population.
