Abstract

High-precision spectropolarimetry of the reddened star HD197770 reveals the 5780A and 5797A diffuse interstellar features to be unpolarized, in contrast to the reported polarization of the 2175A “graphite” bump in this line of sight. This result rules out a connection between these DIBs’ carrier and the small, presumably carbonaceous, grains responsible for the 2175A absorption.
