Abstract

ABSTRACT A slit spectrometry study was carried out on NGC 4594 and in the surrounding diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) in a search for forbidden O I 6300-A emission from the warm neutral medium. An upper limit of 6 times 10 to the -7th erg per sq cm per sec per sr was obtained for forbidden O I. The values for rho and f were less than or equal to 0.2 and 0.9, respectively, which are values that approach being significant limits. To progress further, it will be necessary to cancel out the stellar absorption features from the galaxy, which might be done by finding a combination of spectra which approximate the galaxy and which do not have a forbidden O I component from the ISM.
