Abstract

Summary In the world of boxing, fighters are judged by the quality of their opponents. This way of determining value is reminiscent of Google’s PageRank algorithm, which assigns values to websites based on the value of sites linked to it. We describe the mathematics behind PageRank, and then offer a scheme for adaptingva it to boxing. We illustrate the behavior of this algorithm in several scenarios. We then select 20 top heavyweight boxers from the 1990’s and rank them using our method. A comparison is made to the Colley method of ranking. We conclude by describing some possible extensions of this method.
