Abstract

In 1975, Robert Shuman wrote an article that highlighted ways that secondary educators could support struggling readers within their own content-area classrooms. Some of the points made are still currently supported by research while many others have either been challenged by literacy scholars or expanded in new and exciting ways. This article reviews each of the recommendations Shuman identified with new information and research to discuss how the recommendation would be noted within today’s secondary classrooms.
