Abstract

A Schematic Overview of Addiction: Molecular Effects of Cocaine, Methamphetamine and Morphine on Limbic Neurons

Highlights

  • Illegal drug consumption is a serious growing global problem today

  • The electrical stimulation of some subcortical structures, such as the nucleus accumbens (NA), the lateral hypothalamus, and the ventral tegmental area (VTA), have been proven to induce strong behaviors that are associated with motivations in animals

  • Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine increase the neurotransmitter concentrations by various mechanisms; once more neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and norepinephrine, stay longer in the synaptic cleft in certain areas, they increase the formation of action potentials, and increase the synaptic transmission
