Abstract

Interference from extracellular decoy PD-L1 (from B. Gong et al., J Exp Med 2019)Extracellular PD-L1 contributes to resistance to anti–PD-L1 therapy. Poggio et al. find that some tumor cells release PD-L1 in exosomes. This interferes with T-cell activation, promoting tumor progression. Gong et al. identify transmembrane-minus PD-L1 splice variants secreted in lung cancer patients. This secreted form acts as a decoy for anti–PD-L1, causing resistance to immunotherapy that is overcome by use of anti–PD-1.
