Abstract

Statecraft is a concept focused on the patterns of behavior of states as they pursue their goals in external affairs. Thinking in terms of statecraft is not so much different from examining the patterns of behavior of people or social groups in life. Are they prone to compromise or are they violent? Does ideology matter to them, or they care more about material benefit? The purpose of this paper is to offer some thoughts about the concept of statecraft, its potential use in the study of international relations, and prospective research questions.
