Abstract

This experiment examines the emission of visible light at room temperature by fluorescein mercuric acetate after excitation with an ultra-violet light source. The emission spectrum in the visible region of the spectrum consists of two peaks, attributed to phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence. Emission intensities at each emission maximum are recorded as a function of time after excitation and then analyzed to yield emission lifetimes and kinetic parameters for each process. Relatively long emission life times (1–2 s) at room temperature eliminate the need for cryogenics and costly high-speed data acquisition equipment.
