Abstract

The Kamensko barge is a flat-bottomed fluvial vessel dated between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD. Its remains lie on the riverbed of the Kupa next to the town of Karlovac in Croatia. Constructed mostly from oak on the principles of bottom- based construction, it is 2 m wide and preserved to a length of 12 m. On its last journey it was transporting a cargo of several hundred bricks. Its interesting structural features suggest a kin- ship with other Roman-era shipwrecks from the Danube hydro-graphical basin.
