Abstract
The roller-type positive feed seed metering mechanism consists of two rollers with 45° inclined ends assembled on a hexagonal shaft such that the gap width between the rollers can be adjusted. The rollers rotate inside a circular tube fitted below the hopper. Results of a performance study of this mechanism showed that varying the gap between the rollers and the speed of their rotation had a positive effect on the seeding rate for wheat, barley, and lentil. The minimum gap width required was 5 mm for lentil, 6 mm for wheat, and 9.5 mm for barley for effective seed metering. This mechanism gave good control of the seeding rate of wheat and lentil up to the highest setting of 18.5 mm gap width and 1.69 speed ratio. However, the barley seeding rate at the same setting was highly variable. The roller feed mechanism has potential for use on low cost seed drills.
