Abstract
Leptin was first described as a hormone-like cytokine involved in the control of food intake. It is proposed to act as a ‘fat-o-stat’, being synthesized by fat cells to limit the intake of food and promote the breakdown of fat. The discovery of leptin led to the hope that it might provide a treatment for obesity in humans; genetically obese ob/ob mice treated with leptin lose weight. However in humans, it is a lack of responsiveness to leptin rather than a deficiency per se that is thought to be responsible for certain types of obesity.
