Abstract
Purpose/Objective: Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression increases in a number of CNS insults where blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption is seen. ICAM-1 expression is increased in brain tissue surrounding brain tumors, and decreased expression accompanies maturation of the BBB in development. While blocking ICAM-1 binding to other proteins reduces injury in diverse pathologies ranging from trauma to ischemia, its role in CNS radiation injury is not understood. Our objective was to evaluate the expression and distribution of ICAM-1 in rat spinal cord, and to determine the response, including dose-response and time course following radiation. We also sought to evaluate the association of ICAM-1 with areas of blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) disruption, and its role in the mechanisms of BSCB disruption.
