Abstract

Wnts are secreted glycoproteins that regulate diverse biological processes. In this study, we use a complex 3D co‐culture model of angiogenesis to show that Wnts are involved in regulating in vitro angiogenesis. Specifically, we show that Wnt5a, a non‐canonical Wnt, is upregulated by endothelial cells actively undergoing angiogenesis. Moreover, using quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction, we find that smooth muscle cells express the Wnt5a receptors ROR2 and Fzd7 and that Wnt5a induces smooth muscle cell migration. Overall, our data indicate that endothelial cell‐derived Wnt5a may play a role in mural cell recruitment during angiogenesis.
