Abstract

Purpose: As osteoarthritis progresses, constituents are lost from the extracellular matrix of articular cartilage, and the mechanical properties of the tissue change [1]. While there is some understanding of how tissue constituents like collagen and aggrecan degrade during disease, how tissue mechanics progress in response to these changes in constituents remains unknown. Our recently developed rigidity percolation model provides a framework for understanding how to relate changes in collagen and aggrecan concentrations to the tissue mechanics [2].
