Abstract

I JUST RETURNED from a trip to New Zealand where the above quote took on a new meaning for me. I have been to New Zealand twice before, but I never fail to be amazed and awed by the beauty of the landscape and the hospitality of the people. While there seeing friends, I whitewater rafted for the first time, attended an annual wine festival, and went four-wheeling on a mussel farm in the Marlborough Sounds. What I didn’t do was go skydiving. Nope. Not interested. However, I saw my son Andrew (who is an emergency department nurse) face his fear of heights and jump out of an airplane at 12,000 feet. Six of the members of our group went skydiving, and most want to go again. They said the experience was unparalleled by anything else they had done. For Andrew, skydiving was reaching out without fear for a new and rich experience.
