Abstract
A male ribbon seal ( Histriophoca fasciata ) was captured alive near Morro Bay, California on 16 November 1962, and kept on display in a public aquarium until its death 19 December 1962. Observations on the living animal, the freshly dead carcass and the skull are presented, including a brief comparison with a living Phoca vitulina . This seal represents the first North American record of Histriophoca from south of the Arctic Circle, and constitutes a new record for California.
