Abstract

Abstract Six species of Plocamium Lamouroux (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales) are recognized for New Zealand and the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands: P. angustum (J. Ag.) Hook. fil. et Harv.; P. cartilagineum (L.) Dixon; P. costatum (C. Ag.) Hook. fil et Harv.; P. leptophyllum Kutz.; P. hamatum J. Ag. (from the Kermadec Islands only), and P. microcladioides sp. nov. The taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution and phenology of the species are discussed, and a list of species excludendae is provided. P. microcladioides appears to be endemic to New Zealand, the remainder of the genus being composed of widespread taxa common with the flora of Australia.
