Abstract

ABSTRACTRecent research in the Tonto Basin of central Arizona as part of the Bureau of Reclamation's Roosevelt Lake Project has led to the formulation of a new chronology and phase sequence. This chronology is presented and phases defined. Issues discussed include the presence of an indigenous, Early Ceramic period population (ca. A.D. 100–600); immigration of Hohokam groups into the Tonto Basin during the Gila Butte phase (A.D. 750–850); a change from a buffware- to whiteware-dominated ceramic interaction network during the transition between the Sacaton (A.D. 950–1050) and Ash Creek (A.D. 1050–1150) phases; immigration of pueblo groups during the Roosevelt phase (A.D. 1250–1350); and the construction of platform mounds beginning around A.D. 1280.
