Abstract

Nutrition influences the incidence of dental caries and periodontal disease by its action on the tooth or supporting structure, dental plaque, and the oral environment. The incidence of suboptimal oral health in the United States has resulted in the recognition and emergence of preventive dentistry programs. Improved nutrition is one means of improving or protecting oral health. A review of the literature shows the involvement of nutrition in the host (tooth or supporting structures), agent (dental plaque), and oral environment—all of which influence dental caries and periodontal disease. Since nutrition is an important component of preventive dentistry, the dental health team is practicing dentistry when individualized nutrition counseling is provided for patients.
