Abstract

Pollutants detection and water purification are very important to achieve environmental protection and resource utilization. It has become increasingly important and urgent to fabricate novel environmentally–friendly materials to remove various pollutants. Recently, magnetic chitosan–based materials (M-CSbMs) with abundant reactive –NH2 and –OH groups have been extensively used as adsorbents and photocatalysts for environmental remediation due to its high activity, green sources, biodegradability, and low cost. In this review, several reliable preparation strategies (in-situ strategy, two-step strategy, and post-deposition strategy) of M-CSbMs are summarized. In-depth discussions regarding the parameters affecting the practical potential of M-CSbMs are highlighted in detail. Importantly, the review focused on the applications of M-CSbMs in effective removal and magnetic solid-phase extraction for contaminants, such as heavy metal ions, organic dyes, antibiotics, and other pollutants. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of M-CSbMs are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application in water purification and solid-phase extraction of contaminants.
