Abstract

Abstract The recent spate of both droughts and floods has once again highlighted the extreme spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the supply-demand relationship of South Africa’s water resources. The future of socio-economic development in South Africa will be determined, to a large extent, by the availability of water resources to a rapidly increasing population. This paper considers some of South Africa’s water management problems with particular reference to the inequalities which exist in the spatial and temporal supply and demand patterns. Possible solutions to the problems are examined, including the effect of decentralization plans.
