Abstract
(Anesthesiology. 2018;129:192–215) Since the beginning of obstetric anesthesiology in 1847, the discipline has gone through many changes and employed many different techniques, connecting the fields of obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine, general surgery, neonatology and anesthesiology. Obstetric anesthesia includes a wide range of patient care issues. Clinicians concern themselves with both maternal and neonatal outcomes, and with the prevention as well as management of complications during labor and delivery. This review summarizes advancements in obstetric anesthesia over the past 20 years, including the areas of labor analgesia and anesthesia, anesthesia for cesarean delivery, obstetric anesthesia outcomes, and maternal safety.
