Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the operation principles and characteristics of a novel solar energy sourced power generation system called solar chimney power plant (SCPP) or solar updraft tower (SUT). The discussion includes the physical concept, historical development, characteristics and operational feasibility, as deduced by previous researches and case studies. It also discusses the commercialization of this technology and the continuous efforts aimed at integrating SCPP with water desalination technologies (WDT). Consequently, the authors concluded that there is a significant prospect of integrating SCPP with liquid desiccant system (LDS) for the purpose of efficient simultaneous production of electricity and fresh water.
