Abstract
Since the introduction of Guide F 1001, the chemical protective clothing industry has responded in several ways. A number of clothing manufacturers exclusively report permeation resistance results to ASTM F 1001 battery chemicals, while others use the battery chemicals as a subset of a larger data base on material chemical resistance. The ASTM F 1001 standard has been embraced and used most by chemical protective clothing manufacturers to highlight advances in product chemical resistance. The ASTM F 1001 chemicals are also specified as the minimum battery for chemical resistance testing with the NFPA standards on chemical protective suits and garments. This paper reviews the original basis for the selection of ASTM F 1001 chemicals and provides useful data on test chemicals which can aid the interpretation of chemical resistance test results. The use of the standard within the protective clothing industry is also examined, specifically indicating how battery results are used for representing different types of products.
