Abstract
This paper presents the state of the art on self-excited vibrations in journal bearings. The importance of the theoretical determination of oil film coefficients taking into account viscosity variations due to temperature is stressed. Inclusion of damping terms in the analysis is found to be important for an accurate prediction of stability conditions.
