Abstract
In the last issue of Tribology International, Sunden and Schaub I considered aspects of the importance of piston rings for low and medium speed marine engines and their effect on performance. Some discussion of materials was included but this paper presents a broader and more detailed review of both piston ring and cylinder liner materials. In particular the need to consider the entire system is emphasised.
