Abstract

AbstractThe technique of transforming analogue documents into digital documents using document images is known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Since the mid-1980s, researchers have been studying Bangla character recognition. OCR works for Bengali scripts have received a lot of attention but only few works have been done in this field because of the less availability of Bangla resources. Our paper provides an overview of different OCR techniques for Bengali characters. We studied through a total of 13 papers and prepared a summary about previously applied OCR techniques in Bengali language. We also discussed the methodologies used in different steps of OCR. We analyzed performances of those applied techniques on different datasets. From the review papers, the most promising performance was seen using a BLSTM network which achieved 99.32% accuracy in Bengali character recognition.KeywordsOptical Character Recognition (OCR)Bengali scriptsDigital documents
