Abstract
The timeliness and importance to scholarship of the subject chosen by the author is beyond question, as is the complexity of its investigation. Evaluation of the activity and creative scholarship of this most important Soviet scientist of his time has long been the subject of sharp debates. Study of his heritage has already given birth to a rather extensive literature, which is quite contradictory in its conclusions. Pokrovskii's fate in has proved, as we know, to be not only complicated but dramatic. Yet certain questions have to this day received little investigation, for example, the question of the Marxist trend in Russian historiography of the prerevolutionary period and the founding of Soviet historical scholarship. This seriously complicates comparative research into Pokrovskii's views.
