Abstract
The developments that led up to the original formulation of the non-renormalisation theorem in supersymmetric theories are reviewed. We also explain the ideas which underlie some non-renormalisation theorems that were found recently in superconformal theories of extended rigid supersymmetry. Their relationship to the Maldacena conjecture is briefly discussed.
