Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the control strategies of AC&DC micro grids. Micro grid is a system encompassing distributed generators, energy storage systems and loads. Deployment and use of the micro grid connected to grid through power electronic converters together with energy storage, communication system and distributed loads comes with the obvious challenges of control and protection. Efficient control over the converter output is required to maintain micro grid stability. Hence, identifying an effective control strategy becomes imperative to make micro grids a reliable controllable unit. Overall control is categorized into local and coordinated control. Flexible local current, voltage control and power sharing are achieved in local control. While coordinated control offers intelligent control with extended objectives. The control strategies of micro grids are realized by the control of converters. This paper extensively covers the theory of the various control strategies of converters and the control strategies of DC and AC micro grids from communication point of view. The challenges around these control strategies have also been discussed.
