Abstract
The use of ozone for the decolorisation of reactive dyes from textile effluent was investigated. Several variables, designed to reflect typical dye effluent from a textile plant and including dye concentration, pH, dye structure, salt concentration, ozone concentration and treatment time, were investigated to optimise the dye degradation. The ozone efficiently removed over 99% of the total colour after 30 min for all dye solutions. A higher rate of colour degradation and higher degree of total colour removal was achieved at high pH. Alkaline solutions promoted the formation of hydroxyl radicals, which non-selectively attacked the dye, rapidly resulting in a high rate of colour removal. Ozone removed greater than 50% COD from Remazol Black B solutions at high ozone flow rates. Under similar experimental conditions COD removal from Remazol Red RB and Remazol Golden Yellow RNL solutions was less than 15%.
