Abstract
This chapter first gives a brief introduction of the aims of this book, providing a global overview of current residential hall systems. It then looks at the rich tradition and history of university residential halls from an educational perspective. A review of the relevant literature with regard to the university residential setting is also provided to illustrate the importance of university residential halls.
