Abstract

The paper presents a preliminary review of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis techniques for permanent magnet (PM) machines based only on journal papers published after 1990. The study includes the common abnormalities and faults of PM machines, such as rotor eccentricity, magnet fault, unbalanced magnetic pull, open and short-circuit windings and over temperature. The fault characteristics and the associated detection methods are reviewed and discussed. The study is planned to be continued, as part of a dedicated Working Group on the subject, and the review will be expanded to include relevant conference papers and other publications.
